World of Warcraft Item Upgrades Item upgrades are a way to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade, it may increase the rarity of an item, or its Mark Level, and also boost other stats. Each item has a track to upgrade it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next one by a specific amount. Item Level When an item gets upgraded, its stats increase in value. The value is the sum of an item's upgraded perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive dependent on who you employ and what you do. This is due to how many perks need to be replaced in order for the item to get upgraded. It can also be used to enforce gating requirements when waiting for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It also serves as a gating requirement when waiting to queue for dungeons and scenarios, and raids, as well as to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear (since PvP is capped at a lower level). The average level of an item can be found on the character sheet. Utilizing the level of an item can help players compare the power of equipment when deciding to purchase or sell. It's an indicator of the damage and its quality. The level of the item can be used to compare items when looking at a vendor's inventory. On PC, you can view the item level using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. item upgrades will be displayed with its full description, including ilvl. It can also be located by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor and entering /itemlevel into chat. There are a variety of theories on how the level of an item is determined. One theory is that the item level is a number that comes from a formula that determines the value of an item's stats are worth. It considers that different advantages are valued differently and that gems in the sockets increase the value of the item. This process can result in a calculated amount for the item's level, which is usually close to Blizzard's actual item level. However, this isn't the only factor which determines the ilvl of an item, as the level of the area the item was dropped in could alter the value of its stats, for example by adding an amount to its haste rating or crit rating. Items that drop in higher-level instances will have higher ilvl. Item Stats Item stats are a big element in what makes or breaks an item for players. The game uses them in various ways to encourage players to not limit themselves to a single weapon, and to encourage them to try out other weapons. The stat modifications of weapons boost base stats. These stat mods are then boosted by the player's level. Item upgrades add to that by boosting certain stats on the item. The upgrade costs are determined by the rarity of the item. For instance, a grey or white item will only be upgraded once, whereas an item with rare tiers will be upgraded several times with higher prices. Another way to change the stats on an item is through affixes. They are stat boosters that can be added by the player to an item. Affixes can provide the item additional damage, add a special ability to the item (such as reviving dead or decreasing cooldowns), or make the item unique by giving an additional name to the item. All affixes are re-rolled at the moment by selecting them in the upgrade menu pressing the green button. This procedure will cost the player a certain amount of gold and items, which can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same way as the other rerolling options. In addition to the possibility of rerolling affixes, players may select which of the available stats they want to keep on an item after it is upgraded. The range of stats is determined by the item's level. However every item will contain at least one stat within the same range, unless it's an exclusive item or the item is a God Roll from a raid boss. Another thing that could change is the possibility to upgrade equipment without having to roll the attaches, or select which stats to boost. Like the base equipment, this would have to be done per item and the item comparison interface would not display all the possible stats simultaneously. Item Luck The Luck stat for a player adds up to increase the odds of finding items as well as the properties that appear on loot drops and the intensity of the properties. However, it does not directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It merely gives players the chance to acquire better equipment in earlier waves, and is therefore more beneficial in early game runs than later ones because most players value greater weapon scaling and defense over raw damage gains. In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chance of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This isn't to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chances that increase with each new level of item. These can also be increased by using anti-materials like the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing. Armor, shields and weapons can be made or spawn using the Luck property, with the default value of 40. These items can be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the item's material type) to give +40 Luck, or to increase the existing Luck of an item up to 140. Certain items, such as the Hollow-infused weapon can also be crafted to increase the damage dealt by any skill that causes damage by 5%. These items can be bought at the store or crafted using the right ingredients. Item Failure Not all upgrades work. However, there are some cash shop items that allow players to boost their chance of success or stop them from losing an item in the event that the upgrade fails. When you upgrade an item, the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successful upgrading an item. This can be increased by using Additional Materials or Special materials. There are limits to the extent to which the success rates can be improved, and the overall chance of an upgrade failing cannot exceed 100%. The luck of an item can affect the effectiveness of an upgrade. Each item has an average success rate of 25%, and every item that has Luck increases the chance of success by five percent. The upgrade overlays for items are displayed above items in the inventory. This may cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
